Another ‘COOL’ science lesson

Today we went outside and did an experiment of diet coke and mentos. Before we went outside we made a tube for the mentos to go into the diet coke. When we finish making the tube we went outside and opened the lid. We put our hand in front of the lid to stop the gas escaping. After we took it off and put the mentos in the diet coke and moved from it as far as possible. And all you can see is diet coke shooting out of the bottle.

Today we went outside and did an science experiment with mentos and diet coke.
Ms F started us off. There were three pairs. We twisted the lid slightly and then took it off so that not too much of the gas escaped from the Diet Coke bottle.
We put in the Mentos and then BOOM bang goes the bottle but it did not explode it just shot up.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND MIXING DIET COKE and MENTOS

This activity shows the  reaction of Diet Coke (a carbonated beverage) and Mentos mints. The surface of the Mentos is covered with many small holes that increases the surface area available for reaction thereby allowing CO2  bubbles to form rapidly.  When the mints come into contact with the liquid, a reaction causes the formation of foam at a rapid rate.

Guillerme and Aaron, this sounds like a wicked experiment, did you try with any other sweets? Nice job writing it up too. Ask Miss F about doing a volcano with Bicarb and Vinegar, she’ll know what to do ;-)

Guillerme and Aaron, this is a fantastic video! well done. I really enjoyed watching it and to see the special effects you have added – both slowing it down and reversing it. I liked this in particular because it really allows you to see how the explosion works. It is great to see that you have talked about the science reaction behind the exploding coke – how fascinating, it is not something I understood before reading this. As a trainee teacher it is really exciting to see kids referring to science as ‘cool’. It would be great for you to experiment with other carbonated drinks and sweets and see what happens with those combinations!
